Bridge 277
The Thailand-Burma railway consisted of a 415k track, built between 1942 and 1945 to link Bankok and Rangoon by 50,000 prisoners of war during WWII. Amongst these POWs were members of the Royal Norfolk Regiment - including my 25 year old father
Carrying the 'Death Railway', Bridge 277 spanned the Mekhong river (later re-named the Kwai-Yai after the 1960s film 'The Bridge on the river Kwai'), near Kanchanaburi.
These images relate to the experiences of those who built the notorious railway, the aftermath of conflict, the fragmentation of the representations of conquest (the flags bearing the crest of the Royal Norfolk Regiment and other significant markings) ... and the survival of the broken.
